The overnight sleep study is used to record data about your sleep patterns in order to determine possible causes of daytime sleepiness or fatigue. Sensors (electrodes) are placed on your head, around your eyes and on your chin to determine sleep and varying sleep staging. Respiration sensors are placed around your chest and abdomen (belts) as well as under your nose and in front of your mouth to monitor your breathing. Additional sensors are used to record blood oxygen levels and pulse as well as body position and movement. Cameras may be used to observe your sleep.
Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT) is used to determine the degree of excessive daytime sleepiness
in the absence of cause on an overnight diagnostic test. It is also used to detect narcolepsy.
Maintenance of Wakefulness (MWT) is used to evaluate alertness during the day and the ability to stay
awake.
MSLT and MWT studies are done with sensors that monitor your sleep and your heart.
CPAP, BiLevel and ASV studies are used to evaluate a patient's response to Positive Airway Pressure treatment to accurately determine the best pressure settings.PAP studies are carried out using most of the same sensors as a diagnostic study with the addition of the PAP mask. Depending on the type of mask chosen, the mask will cover either just the nose or both the mouth and the nose.
